Profile of skills and competences
A qualified car mechanic is able to perform the following job functions in accordance with instructions and applicable safety rules and regulations:
- maintaining and repairing petrol- and diesel-powered cars and commercial vehicles that can be registered for goods or passenger transport with or without articulated trailers or flatbeds, including replacement of defective parts;
- assessing whether defective parts can be repaired and providing advice on the most cost-effective repair solutions from the point of view of customer requirements and expectations concerning operational costs, road safety, the appearance and utility value of the vehicle, and environmental standards;
- using repair manuals in Danish and other languages as well as other available data such as instructions concerning motor vehicles in his or her performance of work, using the tools required as a minimum in the trade;
- performing work in accordance with applicable road traffic legislation, environmental standards, safety standards and rules concerning the transport of hazardous goods.
A qualified mechanic has experience in:
- maintaining and servicing passenger cars and business vehicles and identifying and repairing defects in such vehicles;
- using the tools of the trade as well as specialist testing and measuring equipment;
- using the tools, materials and other equipment of the trade in a safe way.
Range of occupations accessible to the holder of the certificate
Qualified mechanics work in garages providing service, maintenance and repair of passenger cars or in garages repairing lorries and buses.
Duration and mode of education and training
The total duration of the education and training programme is 4 years, with 60 weeks of formal education and training and 130 weeks of on-the-job training.
Danish vocational education and training programmes are alternating programmes, which means that the education and training activities alternate between education and training at a school and on-the-job training in an enterprise.
Level of certificate
The training programme is a full vocational education and training programme, equivalent to level 3 in the Isced system (Isced 1997).
Access to the next level of education/training
The education and training described in this certificate gives access to level 4 (Isced) education and training in Denmark.

The following verbal scale is used in the certificate of apprenticeship: passed, passed with distinction, bronze medal, silver medal.
The 7 grade scale is used in the certificate issued by the training college.
