Profile of skills and competences
A qualified carpenter is able to:
- plan and perform assignments that are common to the trade in the quality expected and in compliance with applicable rules, regulations and traditions;
- perform work assignments that are common to the trade and participate in the planning and performance of special assignments;
- seek information and make decisions concerning materials, structural methods and assembly methods, and plan, organise and perform work assignments in collaboration with people from other trade groups at the workplace;
- keep informed of rules and regulations applying to construction, including rules and regulations on fire protection, health and safety at work, tender procedures, tendering and quality assurance;
- plan and perform assignments with due respect of the local and the global environment;
- enrol in qualifying training programmes as well as in programmes of continued and further training and education.
Range of occupations accessible
Carpenters build major timber structures in buildings, roof structures and other types of load-carrying structures. They floor buildings, fit rooms with ceilings, erect rafters, install roof tiles using hammers, saws and other hand tools, carry out heat insulation work and put up timber partition walls. In addition, carpenters install windows, doors and various types of furniture and equipment.
Most carpentry work is carried out at building sites, generally in close cooperation with joiners, plumbers and other skilled craftsmen. Only a small part of preparatory work is carried out in a workshop.
Duration and mode of education and training
The total duration of the education and training programme varies between 3 years and 5 month(s) and 3 years and 10 month(s), with 45 weeks of formal education and training and 132-154 weeks of on-the-job training.
Danish vocational education and training programmes are alternating programmes, which means that the education and training activities alternate between education and training at a school and on-the-job training in an enterprise.
Level of certificate
The training programme is a full vocational education and training programme, equivalent to level 3 in the Isced system (Isced 1997).
Access to the next level of education/training
The education and training described in this certificate gives access to level 4 (Isced) education and training in Denmark.

The following verbal scale is used in the certificate of apprenticeship: passed, passed with distinction, bronze medal, silver medal.
The 7 grade scale is used in the certificate issued by the training college.
